How much does a truck dispatcher cost?
Most dispatch services charge 5–10% of each load or a flat weekly fee. Here is what dispatch companies publish, what the fee should cover, the extra costs to ask about and how to tell which model costs you less.

The short answer
Most truck dispatch services charge a percentage of each load: published 2026 ranges run from about 5% to 10%, with 5–8% the most common. Others charge a flat weekly fee, often $150–$400 per semi truck. Digital Storming charges a flat 5–12% of each load’s gross, negotiable by truck type and carrier profile, with no retainer or weekly fee.

Percentage vs flat weekly fee
Truck dispatchers price their work in two main ways: a percentage of each load they book, or a flat fee per truck per week. A few charge a flat amount per load ($25–$75 per Truck Dispatch Experts, $50–$150 per O Trucking) or a flat monthly fee ($500–$1,500 per O Trucking).
| Compared | Percentage of each load | Flat weekly fee |
|---|---|---|
| How it is charged | A share of each load’s rate, on every load booked | A fixed amount per truck per week |
| In a slow week | Falls with your gross | Stays the same |
| In a week with no loads | Nothing to pay | Check whether it is still owed |
| Costs less when | Weekly gross is below the break-even point | Weekly gross is above the break-even point |
The break-even point is the flat fee divided by the percentage. Against a $300 weekly fee, 8% breaks even at $3,750 of gross a week. A percentage also ties the dispatcher’s pay to the rate: a better-paying load earns them more too.
What dispatchers charge in 2026
Dispatch companies publish their own price guides. They sell dispatch, so read their figures as a snapshot of published prices, not an independent survey. This is what four sources said when we checked them on October 9, 2026.
| Source | Percentage | Flat fees |
|---|---|---|
| DATLoad board · not dated | 5–10% of each delivery invoice | “or a flat per-load fee” (no amount given) |
| Truck Dispatch Experts (TDE)Updated Mar 1, 2026 | 4–10%; 5–8% most common | $150–$400 a week for semis; $200–$500 for box trucks and hotshots; $25–$75 per load |
| O TruckingUpdated Sep 14, 2026 | 5–10% of gross; 6–7% most common for dry van and reefer | $50–$150 per load; $500–$1,500 a month |
| FF DispatchNot dated | 5–8% commission | None listed |
Taken together, a percentage between 5% and 10% of each load is the norm, and flat weekly fees for a semi truck start around $150.
Fees by equipment type
Two of the guides break their ranges down by trailer type, and FF Dispatch lists a starting rate for each:
| Equipment | Truck Dispatch Experts (Mar 2026) | O Trucking (Sep 2026) | FF Dispatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry van | 5–7% | 5–7% | from 5% |
| Reefer | 5–8% | 6–8% | from 5% |
| Flatbed | 6–8% | 7–10% | from 5% |
| Step deck | 6–8% | 7–10% | from 5% |
| Power only | 5–7% | not listed | from 5% |
| Hotshot | 7–10% | not listed | from 6% |
| Box truck | 7–10% | not listed | from 6% |
Box trucks and hotshots sit at the top of the ranges. Their loads also pay less on average in the Truck Dispatch Experts table: $600–$2,500 a load for a box truck against $2,000–$4,500 for a dry van.
What the fee should cover
The fee pays for finding and booking freight. Ask for the list of what is included in writing, and check these tasks are on it:
- Searching the load boards for freight that fits your equipment, lanes and schedule.
- Negotiating the rate with the broker before you agree to the load.
- Sending broker setup packets: your MC authority, certificate of insurance and W-9.
- Rate confirmations, broker calls and updates while the load moves.
- The paperwork for billing after delivery, and help with factoring if you use it.
Ask, too, whether you can turn a load down. Under forced dispatch you can’t. We book only the loads you approve.
Extra costs to ask about
A low headline percentage can cost more once other fees are added. Both price guides list the same kinds of extras:
| Cost and what to ask | Published ranges |
|---|---|
| Setup or onboarding feeAsk: is there a one-time fee before the first load? | $50–$500 (TDE); $100–$500 (O Trucking) |
| Technology or admin feesAsk: is anything charged besides the percentage? | $25–$75 a week (TDE); $25–$100 a month for technology plus $50–$100 for admin (O Trucking) |
| Fee on the fuel surchargeAsk: is the percentage on the full rate or on linehaul only? | Some dispatchers take their percentage from the total rate including fuel surcharge (O Trucking) |
| Broker setup and paperworkAsk: are broker packets and load paperwork included? | $10–$50 per broker; $5–$15 per load (TDE) |
| Factoring coordinationAsk: do you take a share of factoring? | An extra 0.5–2% (TDE) |
| After-hours supportAsk: is a call outside office hours charged? | $50–$100 per call (TDE) |
| Early terminationAsk: how do I cancel, and with how much notice? | $200–$1,000+ (TDE); $500–$2,000 (O Trucking) |
Worked example
Example numbers, not a quote: a $2,500 load at 8%, compared with a $300 flat weekly fee.
At 8%, a $2,500 load costs $2,500 × 0.08 = $200 in dispatch fees. Three of those loads a week cost $600, or about $2,600 a month (a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks). This is how the two models compare over different weeks:
| Example week | Gross | 8% fee | Flat $300 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Busy: 3 loads | $7,500 | $600 | $300 |
| Steady: 2 loads | $5,000 | $400 | $300 |
| Slow: 1 load | $2,500 | $200 | $300 |
The two cost the same at $300 ÷ 0.08 = $3,750 of gross a week. Above that the flat fee costs less; below it the percentage does.
The fee basis matters as much as the rate. If $400 of that $2,500 load were fuel surcharge (again an example), 8% of linehaul only would be $168 instead of $200.

Questions
Dispatcher cost questions
What percentage do most truck dispatchers charge?
Price guides published in 2026 put it at 5–10% of each load. Truck Dispatch Experts calls 5–8% the most common range (March 2026), and O Trucking says 6–7% is most common for dry van and reefer (September 2026). Box trucks and hotshots sit at the top of the range.
Is a flat weekly fee cheaper than a percentage?
Only in weeks when the truck grosses more than the break-even point: the flat fee divided by the percentage. A $300 weekly fee against 8% breaks even at $3,750 a week. In a slower week, or a week with no loads, the percentage costs less. Try your own numbers in the dispatch fee calculator.
Do dispatchers charge on the gross or on linehaul?
It varies, so ask before you sign. Some dispatchers take their percentage from the total rate including the fuel surcharge, others from linehaul only. Our fee is a percentage of each load’s gross.
What does Digital Storming charge for dispatch?
A flat 5–12% of each load’s gross, negotiable by truck type and carrier profile, with no retainer, no weekly fee and no long-term contract. You approve every load. Ask for a quote for your truck.
