How it works
How the numbers are worked out
- Fee per load = average load gross × dispatch percentage.
- Per week = fee per load × loads per week.
- Per month = weekly fee × 52 ÷ 12, because a month averages about 4.33 weeks.
- Break-even = flat weekly fee ÷ percentage. Below that weekly gross the percentage costs less; above it the flat fee does.
Example: a $2,500 load at 8% is a $200 fee. Three of those a week is $600, or about $2,600 a month. Against a $300 flat weekly fee, the two cost the same when the truck grosses $3,750 a week.
A percentage moves with your gross, so a slow week costs less. A flat weekly fee stays the same however many loads you run. Ask any dispatcher whether the percentage is taken from the full rate or from linehaul only, and which other fees apply. Our truck dispatcher cost guide lists the questions and the ranges dispatch companies publish.
