## CDL or non-CDL: what’s the difference?

It comes down to the truck’s weight. From 26,001 lb a truck needs a CDL; box trucks, straight trucks and vans under that need only a regular license.

| --- | --- | --- |
| License | A Class A CDL (tractor-trailers) | A regular driver’s license from any state |

| Typical routes | OTR, regional, local and dedicated | Mostly local, some regional |
| Minimum age | 21 to cross state lines (18 within one state where allowed) | 21 to cross state lines in a truck over 10,000 lb |
| DOT medical certificate | Yes, every 24 months | Yes, for trucks over 10,000 lb across state lines |
| DOT drug test and Clearinghouse | Yes, before you start | Not required by DOT (a carrier may still test) |
| Training for new drivers | Entry-level driver training before a first Class A CDL | None required beyond your license |

## Routes and trucks

- **OTR (over the road):** OTR (over-the-road) drivers run long hauls across many states. They live on the road for two to three weeks at a time, then take several days at home.
- **Regional:** Regional drivers haul loads within one part of the country, such as the Southeast or the Midwest. Most get home every week, often for the weekend.
- **Local:** Local drivers run routes that start and end at the same place, often within about 150 miles, and sleep at home every night.
- **Dedicated:** Dedicated drivers serve the same customer or the same lanes week after week, so their schedule and home time are easier to plan.

- **Dry van:** Dry van trailers are the most common kind: boxed freight such as retail goods, packaged food and paper products.
- **Reefer:** Reefer (refrigerated) trailers carry food and medicine, so the driver watches the temperature as well as the road.
- **Flatbed:** Flatbed trailers are open, for steel, lumber and machinery, and the driver straps, chains and tarps the load.
- **26 ft box truck:** A 26 ft box truck is the biggest you can usually drive without a CDL, often with a liftgate, for furniture, appliances and pallets. Check the door label: rated 26,001 lb or more needs a Class B CDL.
- **Box and straight trucks:** Box and straight trucks of 16 to 24 ft handle local deliveries to stores, offices and homes.
- **Cargo and Sprinter vans:** Cargo and Sprinter vans carry smaller loads with many stops. A van rated 10,000 lb or less isn’t a commercial vehicle: no DOT medical card or hours-of-service log under federal rules.

## How hiring works: from application to your first load

1. **Apply in 3 minutes:** Pick a job and answer a few quick questions about your license, your experience, where you live and the driving you want. **No account and no resume needed.**
2. **Talk to a recruiter:** A recruiter reads your answers and looks for carriers that are hiring for that job near you. When one fits, we call you about its pay, routes and home time.
3. **Meet the carrier:** You fill in the carrier’s own driver application. The carrier pulls your driving record and, for CDL jobs, sets up the DOT drug test and the Clearinghouse check.
4. **Start driving:** Once you accept the carrier’s offer, you go through its orientation and get your truck. Nothing is final until you say yes.

## Truck driver requirements

The federal rules every carrier follows, in plain words. Each carrier adds its own hiring standards on top.

- **21 to cross state lines:** Drivers of commercial trucks, with or without a CDL, must be 21 to drive across state lines (a truck rated over 10,000 lb is a commercial vehicle). Inside one state, states may let drivers start at 18. FMCSA’s Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot (SDAP), which let some 18–20-year-old CDL drivers drive interstate, ended on November 7, 2025. - **No CDL under 26,001 lb:** A single truck needs a Class B CDL from 26,001 lb gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Box trucks, straight trucks and vans rated 26,000 lb or less need only a regular license, unless they carry placarded hazardous materials or 16 or more passengers. (source: [49 CFR 383.91](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.91))
- **Over 10,000 lb is a commercial vehicle:** Across state lines, a truck or van rated 10,001 lb or more is a commercial motor vehicle, and its driver must meet the federal driver rules even without a CDL. A cargo van rated 10,000 lb or less is not one. (source: [49 CFR 390.5](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-390.5))
- **A DOT medical certificate:** Drivers of trucks rated over 10,000 lb that cross state lines need a medical examiner’s certificate, renewed at least every 24 months. Non-CDL drivers carry the card while driving; since June 23, 2025, CDL holders don’t, because the examiner sends the result to the state. (sources: [49 CFR 391.41](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.41), [49 CFR 383.71](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.71))
- **A drug test and a Clearinghouse check:** Before a CDL driver’s first trip, the carrier needs a negative DOT pre-employment drug test and a full query of the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, which the driver consents to online. (sources: [49 CFR 382.701](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.701), [49 CFR 382.301](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.301))
- **English language proficiency (ELP):** Every commercial driver must read and speak English well enough for road signs, inspections and records. Since June 25, 2025, a driver who fails this check at a roadside inspection is put out of service, and FMCSA proposed writing that into its rules in August 2026. - **Driving record (MVR) and driver application:** Before you start, the carrier has you fill in its full driver application and pulls your driving record (MVR) from every state that licensed you in the past three years. Have ready your addresses, licenses, accidents, tickets and employers for the past three years. ## Questions drivers ask

### How do I apply for a truck driving job here?

Tap **Apply now** on a job and answer a few quick questions: your name and phone, where you live, your license and experience, and the kind of driving you want. It takes about 3 minutes, with no account or resume needed.

### Is it free to apply?

Yes. Applying to Digital Storming’s driver jobs is free: carriers pay Digital Storming’s placement fee, and each job shows its pay range before you apply.

### How much do truck drivers make a week?

Experienced CDL-A company drivers are advertised at about $1,250 to $1,700 a week (October 2026), and new CDL drivers at about $900 to $1,250. The American Trucking Associations puts the median dry van company driver at about $1,416 a week. Non-CDL box truck and van jobs pay about $18 to $25 an hour. The government’s May 2025 medians are lower: $1,128 a week for heavy truck drivers and $21.57 an hour for light truck drivers.

More detail: [how much CDL drivers make](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/how-much-do-cdl-drivers-make/) and [box truck driver salary](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/box-truck-driver-salary/).

### Can I get a truck driving job with no experience?

Yes: Digital Storming’s CDL-A and non-CDL box truck jobs both welcome new drivers. Box truck and van jobs need only a regular driver’s license. For a Class A job you first get a learner’s permit, finish entry-level driver training and pass the skills test: see [how to get your CDL](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/cdl-truck-driver/#new-drivers), or our guide on [how to become a truck driver](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/how-to-become-a-truck-driver/).

### What is the difference between a CDL job and a non-CDL job?

The difference between a CDL job and a non-CDL job is the truck’s weight rating. A single truck rated 26,001 lb or more, or a combination rated 26,001 lb or more with a trailer rated over 10,000 lb, needs a CDL. Box trucks, straight trucks and vans rated 26,000 lb or less need only a regular license. Our guide covers the details: [do you need a CDL to drive a box truck?](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/do-you-need-a-cdl-to-drive-a-box-truck/)

### How old do you have to be to drive a truck?

You must be 21 to drive a commercial truck across state lines. Inside one state, many states let drivers start at 18, so some local jobs hire younger drivers.

### Why doesn’t the job name the carrier?

The job doesn’t name the carrier because we match you with the carrier that fits after you apply. Your recruiter tells you the carrier’s name, its exact pay and its home time before you fill in that carrier’s application, so you never apply to an employer you haven’t been told about.

### What happens after I apply?

A Digital Storming recruiter reads your answers and looks for carriers that are hiring for that job near you. When a carrier fits, the recruiter calls you to go over the pay, the route and the next steps. Nothing is final until you accept an offer from the carrier.

### Do you work with owner-operators?

Digital Storming’s driver jobs are for company drivers. If you run your own authority, our [truck dispatch services](https://digitalstorming.com/truck-dispatch-services/) find loads and handle the paperwork for owner-operators.
