# How to Become a Truck Driver With No Experience in 2026

New drivers usually get a Class A CDL in five weeks to three months: DOT physical, permit, ELDT and skills test. Tuition: $3,500–$9,495 at schools we checked.

By [Eric Parker](https://digitalstorming.com/author/eric-parker/), Carrier Onboarding Specialist · Published October 29, 2026

How to become a truck driver: pass a DOT physical, hold a commercial learner’s permit 14 days, take entry-level training at a registered school and pass the three-part skills test. It usually takes five weeks to three months.

A line cook in Arizona, 34, with a clean driving record, keeps seeing ads that say “No experience? We’ll train you.” Before he gives notice, he wants straight answers: which tests, how many weeks, what it costs and what strings come with free training.

This guide walks the path to a first Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) step by step, as the rules stand on October 29, 2026. Then it covers tuition, company-paid training contracts, timelines, the first job and the pay. Every rule links to its source.

## How do you become a truck driver with no experience?

Short answer: To become a truck driver with no experience, you pass a DOT physical and get a commercial learner’s permit. Next you complete entry-level driver training with a school on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry and pass a three-part skills test. Then you join a carrier that hires new CDL holders. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.

Tractor-trailer jobs need a Class A CDL, for combinations rated 26,001 pounds or more pulling a trailer rated over 10,000 pounds, under [49 CFR 383.91](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.91). Experience matters only at hiring, and not for every job: our [CDL-A truck driver job](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/cdl-truck-driver/) takes new CDL holders, and permit holders who are finishing school.

Table: The path to a first Class A CDL and the federal rule behind each step

| Step | What you do | Federal rule | Time |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Eligibility | Confirm age, English and lawful status | [391.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.11), [383.71](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.71) | Before you pay anyone |
| 2. DOT physical | Exam by a certified medical examiner | [391.41](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.41) | One visit |
| 3. Learner’s permit | Pass your state’s knowledge tests | [383.25](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.25) | Then wait at least 14 days |
| 4. Entry-level training | Theory plus behind-the-wheel training | [Part 380](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/part-380) | 3 to 7.5 weeks full time |
| 5. Skills test | Pre-trip inspection, basic control, road test | [383.133](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.133) | One test day |
| 6. CDL issued | State checks the Clearinghouse and your records | [383.73](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.73) | Set by your state |
| 7. First job | Carrier checks your record, drug-tests and road-tests you | [391.23](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.23), [382.701](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.701) | Set by the carrier |

How long each step to a CDL takes

- **DOT physical:** One visit to a certified medical examiner.
- **Learner's permit:** Knowledge tests, then hold it at least 14 days.
- **Entry-level training:** 3 to 7.5 weeks full time. A wait for a seat can add a month or more.
- **Skills test:** One test day. Your school has up to two business days to report your training first.
- **CDL in hand:** About five weeks to three months after you start.

## Can you get a CDL at 18?

Short answer: Yes. Federal rules let you get a commercial learner’s permit and drive a commercial truck inside your own state from age 18, though a state can be stricter. You must be 21 to drive across state lines, and the pilot that let some 18–20-year-olds drive interstate ended on November 7, 2025.

[49 CFR 391.11](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.11) requires interstate drivers to be “at least 21 years old,” while [49 CFR 350.305](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-350.305) says “All intrastate CMV drivers must be at least 18 years of age.” The permit has the same 18 floor under [383.25](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.25), and an in-state-only license carries restriction code K under [383.153](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.153).

“In-state” is narrower than it sounds: under [49 CFR 390.5](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-390.5), a trip inside one state is still interstate commerce when the shipment started or will end outside it.

After the pilot ended, the American Trucking Associations asked for a five-year exemption to keep training under-21 drivers ([FMCSA notice, January 28, 2026](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/01/28/2026-01679/qualifications-of-drivers-minimum-age-for-drivers-american-trucking-associations-application-for)). We found no decision as of October 29, 2026.

[Iowa Western Community College](https://www.iwcc.edu/ce/cdl-program/) takes students at 18 and notes that those under 21 “may drive within state lines only.” If you’d rather earn while you wait, box trucks rated 26,000 pounds or less need only a regular license, and some local jobs hire at 18. See our [non-CDL box truck driver job](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/non-cdl-truck-driver/) and [whether you need a CDL to drive a box truck](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/do-you-need-a-cdl-to-drive-a-box-truck/).

## Do you need to speak English to get a CDL?

Short answer: Yes. Every commercial driver must read and speak English well enough to talk with the public, read road signs, answer officers’ questions and fill in records. Since June 25, 2025, a driver who fails that check at a roadside inspection is placed out of service, and the CDL skills test is always given in English.

The standard is [49 CFR 391.11(b)(2)](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.11). [49 CFR 383.133](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.133) bans interpreters and other languages during the skills test. It still lets states give the knowledge tests in another language without an interpreter, but states can be stricter: [Texas](https://www.dps.texas.gov/news/dps-announces-changes-cdl-knowledge-testing) switched to English-only knowledge tests on June 1, 2026.

Enforcement is what changed. FMCSA’s [August 10, 2026 proposed rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/08/10/2026-16288/english-language-proficiency-out-of-service-criteria) counts 60,399 English proficiency violations between June 25, 2025 and March 19, 2026, with 19,045 ending in out-of-service orders. By its [August 31 announcement](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/newsroom/us-transportation-secretary-duffy-us-homeland-security-secretary-mullin-white-house-fraud), FMCSA put the out-of-service total above 28,000. Comments on codifying it closed October 9, 2026; no final rule yet.

Publicly funded job programs check earlier too. The Labor Department’s guidance TEN 01-26 tells them to “assess and verify English proficiency early in the process,” as [California’s Employment Development Department](https://edd.ca.gov/en/jobs_and_training/Information_Notices/wsin26-06/) relayed it. Our [English proficiency guide](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/fmcsa-english-proficiency-rule/) explains the roadside test.

## Can non-citizens get a CDL in 2026?

Short answer: U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents get a regular CDL by proving their status and that they live in the issuing state. Since March 16, 2026, other non-citizens can get only a non-domiciled CDL, and only with H-2A, H-2B or E-2 status shown on a valid I-94. That license lasts one year at most.

A regular CDL needs proof of citizenship or permanent residency and of domicile under [49 CFR 383.71](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.71), and the state verifies your Social Security number under [383.73](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.73).

The non-domiciled limits come from FMCSA’s [February 13, 2026 final rule](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/02/13/2026-02965/restoring-integrity-to-the-issuance-of-non-domiciled-commercial-drivers-licenses-cdl). Under [49 CFR 383.5](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.5), a foreign-domiciled applicant needs an unexpired foreign passport and an I-94 showing H-2A (temporary agricultural worker), H-2B (temporary non-agricultural worker) or E-2 (treaty investor) status. States confirm it through the federal SAVE system, the license ends at the I-94 date or after one year, whichever is sooner, and renewals are in person. Older licenses aren’t revoked automatically, but the new test applies at the next renewal or transfer.

The D.C. Circuit [refused to pause the rule](https://media.cadc.uscourts.gov/orders/docs/2026/05/26-1032LDSN2.pdf) on May 5, 2026, and as of October 29 we found no ruling on the merits. Our [FMCSA rule changes roundup](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/fmcsa-rule-changes-2026/) has the history.

## What happens at the DOT physical?

Short answer: A certified medical examiner checks your vision, hearing, blood pressure and medical history against FMCSA’s standards. If you qualify, the certificate lasts up to 24 months, or less for some conditions. Since June 23, 2025, the examiner’s result goes electronically to your state, so CDL and permit holders no longer carry the paper card.

The standards in [49 CFR 391.41](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.41) include:

- Vision: 20/40 in each eye, with or without glasses, a 70-degree field of vision and the ability to tell red, green and amber signals apart.
- Hearing: a forced whisper heard at 5 feet in the better ear, with or without a hearing aid, or a passing audiometer test.
- Conditions and drugs: insulin-treated diabetes, epilepsy and some heart or breathing conditions have their own rules; Schedule I drugs are disqualifying.

The certificate lasts up to 24 months under [391.45](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.45); drivers certified under the insulin-treated diabetes or alternative vision standards are rechecked every 12. On [June 23, 2025](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/newsroom/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-launches-digital-medical-certification-cut), FMCSA began sending examiners’ results from its National Registry straight to state licensing agencies. Section [391.41(a)(2)](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.41) now says CDL and permit holders don’t need to carry the certificate. [Manchester Community College](https://mccnh.edu/program/wdc-commercial-driver-license-cdl-class-a/) in New Hampshire estimates the exam at about $100.

## How do you get a commercial learner’s permit?

Short answer: You apply at your state’s licensing office with your ID, residency and medical paperwork, then pass the knowledge tests for a Class A permit. The permit lets you drive a truck only with a CDL holder in the front seat beside you. You must hold it 14 days before you’re allowed to take the skills test.

Under [49 CFR 383.25](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.25):

- A properly licensed CDL holder must sit in the front seat and supervise you.
- You need a regular license from the same state and must be 18 or older.
- No hazardous materials. Only passenger, school bus and tank endorsements can go on a permit, and tank means empty tanks only.
- The permit lasts up to one year from first issue; states may issue it for less. Texas charges $25 for a permit that expires after 180 days and can be renewed, per the [Texas DPS fee schedule](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/driver-license-fees).
- You can’t take the skills test in the first 14 days.

This is also where Clearinghouse II applies. Since November 18, 2024, [383.73](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.73) makes the state query FMCSA’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse before issuing a permit or CDL. A driver prohibited for an unresolved drug or alcohol violation gets neither until the federal return-to-duty process lifts the prohibition.

Iowa Western wants the permit issued at least 14 days before class starts.

## What is entry-level driver training (ELDT)?

Short answer: Entry-level driver training is the federal course required before the skills test for a first Class A or B CDL or a B-to-A upgrade. A first hazmat, passenger or school bus endorsement needs it too. It has a theory part, which you must pass with at least 80%, and behind-the-wheel training on a range and public roads.

The rules in [49 CFR Part 380](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/part-380), in force since February 7, 2022, that matter when you shop:

- Theory can be online, taught by a qualified theory instructor, with an overall 80% minimum score.
- Behind-the-wheel can’t. Range and road training happen in a real Class A truck from one provider, and a simulator can’t replace either.
- No minimum hours. The instructor must cover every topic, document your proficiency and record your behind-the-wheel hours.
- The school reports you to FMCSA by midnight of the second business day after you finish, and the state verifies that record before your skills test.

Only providers on the [Training Provider Registry](https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/) count. On October 29, 2026, it listed 18,348 active providers at 31,150 locations, plus public lists of locations under review and removed.

That list keeps shrinking. FMCSA [removed nearly 3,000 providers on December 1, 2025](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/newsroom/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-cracks-down-illegal-providers-commercial) and put 4,500 on notice; in [February 2026](https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-moves-shut-down-hundreds-cdl-mills), 1,426 on-site investigations produced 448 proposed removals. FMCSA’s running totals vary, from nearly 10,000 removed in its [July 16 release](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/newsroom/trumps-departments-transportation-homeland-security-team-crack-down-fraud-cdl-schools) to more than 8,000 in its [August 31 release](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/newsroom/us-transportation-secretary-duffy-us-homeland-security-secretary-mullin-white-house-fraud). The August release also announced 110-plus emergency removals, 160-plus proposed removals and an audit of third-party skills testers.

> Watch out: Under [49 CFR 380.723](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/part-380), training a provider gives after its removal date is invalid, and in fraud cases where trainees knowingly took part, FMCSA can cancel training retroactively. A school facing proposed removal must tell its students. Check the registry before you pay and again the week you start.

## How do you choose a CDL school?

Short answer: Choose a CDL school by confirming that its exact campus is listed on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry and isn’t under review. Then compare behind-the-wheel hours, what tuition includes, who gives the skills test, the truck you’ll test in, the wait for a seat and the refund policy. Get the answers in writing.

Each campus registers separately under [380.703](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/part-380), so search the registry by the address where you’ll train. Then ask:

- How much behind-the-wheel time? SUNY Jefferson’s [May 2026 program](https://sunyjefferson.edu/news/cdl_summer26_jcc.php) with The CDL Schools listed 110 behind-the-wheel hours in a 192-hour course. [Manchester Community College](https://mccnh.edu/program/wdc-commercial-driver-license-cdl-class-a/) lists up to 45 hours of range and road time.
- What’s extra? Manchester’s $9,150 covers training and one state test session. The permit copy ($20), physical (about $100), drug screen (about $100) and a $450 re-test are extra.
- Who tests me? [Aims Community College](https://www.aims.edu/programs/commercial-drivers-license) in Colorado advertises “Train here, test here” with its own examiners; Iowa Western tests with an Iowa DOT-certified examiner.
- What truck? Test in an automatic and your CDL bars manual transmissions; test without air brakes and it bars air-brake trucks, under [49 CFR 383.95](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.95).
- How long is the wait, and what’s refundable? Aims usually has a one- to two-month wait to start. Iowa Western refunds in full, minus $50, if you cancel 10 business days ahead.
- Which carriers hire your graduates? That’s likely where your first job comes from.

## What is on the CDL skills test?

Short answer: The CDL skills test has three parts taken in order: a pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control maneuvers such as straight and curved backing, and an on-road drive in traffic. You take it in a truck that matches the class you want by weight rating, entirely in English, with no interpreter allowed.

[49 CFR 383.113](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.113) lists the skills, and [383.133](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.133) requires a test truck that represents your class by weight rating:

- Pre-trip inspection: identify each safety-related part, from engine compartment and steering to brakes, wheels and coupling, and explain what you check. Air-brake trucks add the low-pressure warning and air build-up checks.
- Basic control: smooth starts and stops, straight-line and curved backing, turns and shifting.
- Road test: visual search, signaling, speed for conditions, safe gaps, turns that allow for off-tracking and following distance.
> Tip: Practice the pre-trip inspection out loud, in English, until you can name every part without notes. You must identify each part and explain what you’re checking, so it’s also the longest stretch of English you’ll speak to an examiner.

## Which CDL endorsements should a new driver get?

Short answer: Most new drivers don’t need an endorsement to get hired. Tanker (N) and doubles/triples (T) take only a knowledge test and open more kinds of loads. Hazmat (H) also needs entry-level theory training and a TSA security threat assessment that costs $88.25, and X combines tanker and hazmat in one code.

Table: CDL endorsements for freight drivers and what each takes

| Code | Lets you drive | Test | Extra steps |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| T | Double and triple trailers | Knowledge | None |
| N | Tank vehicles | Knowledge | Can go on a permit, empty tanks only |
| H | Placarded hazardous materials | Knowledge | First-time theory training, TSA threat assessment |
| X | Tank vehicles hauling hazmat | Tank and hazmat knowledge | Same as H |

The tests come from [49 CFR 383.93](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.93) and the codes from [383.153](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.153); passenger (P) and school bus (S) are for bus drivers. A hazmat endorsement needs TSA clearance and renewal at least every five years under [383.141](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.141). [TSA](https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/hazmat-endorsement) charges $88.25 from October 1, 2026 ($41 with a valid TWIC in states that accept it). It takes fingerprints at an enrollment center (or the DMV in a few states) and recommends applying 60 days before you need a decision.

You can start without any of these: our [CDL-A truck driver job](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/cdl-truck-driver/) doesn’t require endorsements.

## Can you get a CDL with a DUI or a felony?

Short answer: Often, yes. Federal CDL rules don’t bar people with felony records in general. They disqualify drivers for listed offenses, such as DUI, refusing a test or using a vehicle to commit a felony, mainly when the driver already holds a permit or CDL. Hazmat endorsements add TSA criminal checks, and carriers set their own lookback periods.

[49 CFR 383.51](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-383.51) applies to anyone driving a truck that requires a CDL, and to permit and CDL holders even in their own car.

Table: Major offenses that disqualify a CDL or permit holder under 49 CFR 383.51

| Offense | First conviction | First, hauling hazmat | Second conviction |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Alcohol concentration of 0.04 or more in a truck | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Refusing an implied-consent alcohol test | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Leaving the scene of an accident | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Using the vehicle to commit a felony | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Causing a death through negligent truck driving | 1 year | 3 years | Life |
| Using the vehicle in a drug-distribution felony | Life, no reinstatement | Life, no reinstatement | Life, no reinstatement |
| Using a truck in a human trafficking felony | Life, no reinstatement | Life, no reinstatement | Life, no reinstatement |

States may reinstate most lifetime bans after 10 years and a state-approved rehabilitation program, but not the last two rows. Two serious traffic violations in a truck within three years, such as speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, cost 60 days; a third costs 120.

For an older record, two other checks usually matter more:

- Hazmat: under [49 CFR 1572.103](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-1572.103), murder, terrorism and espionage permanently rule out a hazmat endorsement. Robbery, arson, weapons crimes and drug distribution rule it out within seven years of conviction or five years of release from prison.
- Carriers and schools: Swift’s [new-driver OTR job](https://swifttrans.com/careers/drivers/search-driving-jobs/search-results/62098) requires no DUI within 10 years for CDL-A holders and no drug-related conviction in 5 years. It also allows no more than 2 moving violations in 2 years. Manchester Community College wants no alcohol-related or major driving offenses in the past two years.

Ask your state licensing agency whether a DUI from before you held a permit counts toward a later “second offense.” Once licensed, our [CDL protection plans](https://digitalstorming.com/cdl-protection-plan/) help drivers with citations and inspections.

## How much does CDL training cost?

Short answer: Published Class A tuition at the four college programs we checked runs from $3,500 to $9,495, before the DOT physical, drug test and state license fees. Company-paid programs charge no tuition upfront but tie you to the carrier for a set time, and public workforce programs can pay tuition for people who qualify.

Table: Published Class A CDL tuition at four college programs, checked October 29, 2026

| Program | Tuition | Length | Extra or not included |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Aims Community College](https://www.aims.edu/programs/commercial-drivers-license), Colorado | $3,500 | Up to 3 weeks, or 6 weeks of weekends | $120 registration (background check, drug test) |
| [Iowa Western Community College](https://www.iwcc.edu/ce/cdl-program/) | $4,700 | 4 weeks | Arrive with your own permit, physical and drug test |
| [Manchester Community College](https://mccnh.edu/program/wdc-commercial-driver-license-cdl-class-a/), New Hampshire | $9,150 | 85 hours over about 5 weeks | About $220 in permit, physical and drug screen; $450 re-test |
| [SUNY Jefferson](https://sunyjefferson.edu/news/cdl_summer26_jcc.php) with The CDL Schools, New York | $9,495 | 4 weeks, 192 hours (May 2026) | The Class D to Class A license upgrade |

State fees come on top: in Texas, $25 for the permit and $97 for an eight-year CDL, per the [Texas DPS fee schedule](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/driver-license-fees).

Ways to pay less:

- Workforce funding: states pay for CDL training under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) for eligible adults. Indiana’s [October 2026 memo](https://www.in.gov/dwd/files/activepolicies/2026-02-M_WIOA_Funded_Training_for_CDL.pdf?language_id=1) on that training tells case managers to assess English first.
- Military grants: Aims says its CMVOST grant covers 100% of tuition and fees for eligible current or former service members and their spouses or children.
- Carrier reimbursement: Roehl may reimburse up to $6,000 of outside tuition, per its [CDL cost page](https://www.roehl.jobs/driving-jobs/cdl-truck-driving-schools/cdl-school-cost). Schneider pays qualified drivers $200 a month, up to $7,000, per its [training page](https://schneiderjobs.com/truck-driving-jobs/inexperienced/paid-cdl-training).
> Example: Say you pay Iowa Western’s $4,700 and qualify for a $200-a-month reimbursement like Schneider’s. Recovering it all takes 24 payments (23 of $200, then $100), about two years with that carrier. Leave after one year and you’ve recovered $2,400, about half.

## How does paid CDL training work?

Short answer: With paid CDL training, a trucking company hires you as a trainee, pays you a weekly wage while you earn your CDL and covers the tuition. In return you agree to drive for that carrier for a set time or mileage. Leave early and you may owe the value of the training, so read the agreement before you sign.

Two carriers’ pages show the model:

- Roehl hires trainees from day one at $616 a week for a three-week program, with lodging and most meals covered, per its [CDL cost page](https://www.roehl.jobs/driving-jobs/cdl-truck-driving-schools/cdl-school-cost). Its [training page](https://www.roehl.jobs/driving-jobs/cdl-truck-driving-schools), updated October 19, 2026, calls the training’s value “in effect a loan to you,” forgiven once you finish and drive 120,000 solo miles for Roehl. That page puts it at about 15 months; its [FAQ page](https://www.roehl.jobs/driving-jobs/resources/truck-driver-faqs) says about 18.
- Schneider’s paid [CDL Apprenticeship Training](https://schneiderjobs.com/truck-driving-jobs/inexperienced/paid-cdl-training) runs five to seven and a half weeks at a Schneider facility, with lodging and meals where needed. You need a permit from your home state and a U.S. license held for at least 12 months.

Test a mileage target against a realistic pace. At an example 2,000 paid miles a week, 120,000 miles takes 60 weeks, about 14 months; at 1,700 miles, about 71 weeks. Time parked waiting on loads stretches it.

> Watch out: Before you sign, find out from the agreement itself, not the recruiter’s summary, what you’d owe if you left after one month, six months and a year. Check too whether the amount shrinks as you drive, and whether the commitment counts months or miles.
> Our take: Paid training is a strong deal if you’d happily run that carrier’s routes for the whole commitment, which for new drivers often means over-the-road work. If you already know you want local work near home, paying community college tuition and keeping your options open can cost less than a contract you break.

## How long does it take to get a CDL?

Short answer: Getting a CDL usually takes about five weeks to three months. Federal rules make you hold the learner’s permit at least 14 days before the skills test. The training programs we checked run three to seven and a half weeks full time. The wait for a school seat or a test date can add a month or more.

Example timeline at a school like Iowa Western, which wants the permit 14 days before class:

- Week 1: DOT physical, permit tests, Clearinghouse registration.
- Weeks 2 and 3: the 14-day permit clock runs.
- Weeks 3 to 7: a four-week course ending in the skills test.
- Week 7 or 8: CDL issued; carrier orientation.

Add Aims’ usual one- to two-month wait for a seat, or a weekend schedule, and three months is realistic. Company programs run about three weeks at Roehl and five to seven and a half at Schneider. And don’t book a test for the morning after class: your school has until midnight of the second business day to report your training.

## How do you get your first truck driving job?

Short answer: Apply to carriers that hire new CDL holders, usually for over-the-road or regional van and reefer work with a trainer at first. Before your first load, the carrier checks your driving record, your FMCSA crash and inspection history and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, gives you a drug test and road-tests you.

What the carrier checks:

- Application: three years of addresses, licenses, accidents, convictions and employers, plus seven more years of CDL driving jobs, under [49 CFR 391.21](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.21).
- Driving record: your record from every state that licensed you in three years, and your safety history with past DOT-regulated employers, under [391.23](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.23).
- PSP report: FMCSA’s [Pre-Employment Screening Program](https://www.psp.fmcsa.dot.gov/) report “pulls your 5-year crash and 3-year roadside inspection history,” and a carrier needs your written consent to see it under [49 U.S.C. 31150](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/49/31150). You can request your own first.
- Clearinghouse and drug test: a full Clearinghouse query, which needs your electronic consent, and a verified negative drug test before you drive, under [382.701](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.701), [382.703](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.703) and [382.301](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-382.301).
- Road test: the carrier may accept your new CDL instead, or test you anyway, under [391.31](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.31) and [391.33](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/section-391.33).

In the postings we checked on October 29, 2026, entry-level openings were mostly over-the-road and regional. Swift’s [OTR dry van job in Lewiston, Idaho](https://swifttrans.com/careers/drivers/search-driving-jobs/search-results/62098) says “Will Train New Driver,” with trip pay of $0.43 to $0.58 a mile. Schneider’s [OTR van job in Dallas and Waco](https://schneiderjobs.com/search-driving-jobs/details/251442) takes “All CDL holders,” averages $1,040–$1,275 a week and guarantees at least $1,000 a week for the first 90 days. Dedicated and local jobs often want experience. Knight’s [dedicated regional job in Dallas](https://www.knighttrans.com/job/dedicated-regional-cdl-a-truck-driver-7-dallas-tx-001457250624/) asks for six months of Class A experience in the past year, or a year in the past five.

Our [CDL-A truck driver job](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/cdl-truck-driver/) welcomes new CDL holders, and you can apply with a permit while you finish school. It pays $900–$1,700 a week, with new drivers near the low end.

## Is a CDL worth it in 2026?

Short answer: A CDL is worth it for many people. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earned a median of $58,640 a year in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The government projects about 214,500 openings a year through 2035. First-year pay usually runs lower, and long-haul jobs cost you nights at home.

What heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earned, May 2025 (annual wage by percentile)

- 10th percentile: $40,140
- 25th percentile: $47,960
- Median: $58,640
- 75th percentile: $69,120
- 90th percentile: $79,380

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wages, May 2025 data (released 2026), heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers (53-3032), national, wage and salary jobs.

In the [BLS data](https://data.bls.gov/oesprofile/?year=2025&major_group=530000&occupation=533032&measure=01&areas=INDUSTRY,STATE,MSA), the median is $28.19 an hour, about $1,128 a week. The [Occupational Outlook Handbook](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/transportation-and-material-moving/heavy-and-tractor-trailer-truck-drivers.htm), updated August 2026, projects 4% growth from 2025 to 2035. Industry figures run higher. The American Trucking Associations’ 2026 study put the median dry van company driver at $73,639 for 2025, [Fleet Equipment reported](https://www.fleetequipmentmag.com/ata-driver-pay-continues-to-rise-as-trucking-emerges-from-a-tough-four-years/). Roehl says drivers with a year on the job averaged $1,435 a week in September 2026, on its [experienced driver page](https://www.roehl.jobs/driving-jobs/experienced-drivers).

A new driver’s pay is mostly miles times rate. Swift advertises “Starting at $0.50 CPM for New Solo OTR Drivers” on its [recent graduates page](https://swifttrans.com/careers/drivers/recent-graduates). At an example 2,200 paid miles a week, that’s $1,100 (2,200 × $0.50), or $55,000 over 50 working weeks; at 1,800 miles, it’s $900 a week.

Set that against up to about $9,500 in tuition, or a carrier commitment of 15 months or more, and weeks away from home over the road. See [how much CDL drivers make](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/how-much-do-cdl-drivers-make/) for pay by route.

## What to do next

- Confirm the basics in 49 CFR 391.11: age, English and your citizenship, residency or visa status.
- Book a DOT physical with a certified medical examiner, and register in the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Get your learner’s permit and start the 14-day clock.
- Choose a registered school campus, or a paid carrier program whose agreement you’ve read line by line.
- Test in a manual truck with air brakes if you can, so your CDL carries no equipment restrictions.
- Request your own PSP report and keep your driving record clean.

When you have your CDL, or a permit and a graduation date, apply for our [CDL-A truck driver job](https://digitalstorming.com/careers/cdl-truck-driver/). It’s one free application, and a recruiter matches you with carriers that hire new drivers.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I get my CDL online?

You can do only part of your CDL training online. A school on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry can teach the theory portion of entry-level driver training online. Behind-the-wheel range and road training must happen in a real truck, and a simulator can't replace it. The DOT physical and the skills test happen in person too.

### Do I need a high school diploma to get a CDL?

You don't need a high school diploma for a CDL under federal rules. FMCSA's driver qualifications cover age, English, medical fitness, a valid license, disqualifying offenses and a road test, and none of them is an education requirement. Some schools and carriers set their own, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a postsecondary nondegree award as the typical entry credential for heavy truck drivers.

### What happens if I fail part of the CDL skills test?

If you fail one part of the CDL skills test, the test stops there, because the pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test must be passed in that order. Parts you've passed count only while your first learner's permit is valid; if you renew the permit, you retake all three. Your state sets the wait and the fee for a retest.

### Does a CDL from one state let me drive in every state?

A CDL issued by your home state lets you drive in every state, but you may hold a license from only one state at a time. If you move, federal rules give you 30 days after setting up your new home to apply for a CDL in the new state.

### Can I drive a truck for a living without a CDL?

You can drive for a living without a CDL in box trucks, straight trucks and cargo vans rated 26,000 pounds or less, unless they haul placarded hazmat. Our guides cover [when a box truck needs a CDL](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/do-you-need-a-cdl-to-drive-a-box-truck/) and [what box truck drivers earn](https://digitalstorming.com/blog/box-truck-driver-salary/).

### Can I get a CDL if my driver's license is suspended?

You can't get a CDL while your driver's license is suspended. A learner's permit is valid only alongside a valid regular license from the same state. Before issuing a permit or CDL, your state also checks your record in every state through national driver databases. Clear the suspension first, then apply.
